Obesity is the number one risk factor that leads to type 2 diabetes! Diabetes is a serious disease that can lead to many problems such as blindness. There is a difference between obesity and being overweight.
Overweight: Above normal and healthy weight.
Obese: Severly overweight with a Body Mass Index above or equal to the 95th percentile.
Body Mass Index: A measurement of the amount of the body’s fat based on the calculation of your height and weight.
Obesity is more prevalent than ever in our children. In Texas, 1 IN 3 CHILDREN are overweight or obese. Texas is currently the most obese state. The number of overweight and obese children has also significantly increased since 1980 (healthiergeneration.org).
Together we can change these alarming numbers. We are all used to a certain diet and lifestyle. Let’s change it to be healthy to prevent these avoidable yet detrimental health problems for our children.
